Bank debits — ACH and BECS

Taking money straight from a bank account, the settlement delay, and what a returned debit does.

Last updated September 2, 2026

As well as cards, a membership can be collected by direct debit from a bank account — ACH in the United States, BECS in Australia. Fees are typically far lower than card fees, which matters on large recurring amounts.

Whether you can offer it

It depends on the payment gateway the tribe collects through, not on a setting inside Memberships. Where it is available, the member's activation page offers a Credit Card / Bank Account toggle instead of a card form alone.

The authority

The member authorises the debit themselves, on the page. They are told plainly that they are authorising debits for the amounts owed under the membership terms, and that debits take three to five business days to settle.

It is not instant

A DEBIT IN FLIGHT BLOCKS EVERY OTHER COLLECTION
While a bank debit is still settling, no further collection is attempted for that member — including on their card. That prevents taking the money twice, but it does mean a member on bank debit can look untouched for several days. The payment appears on the ledger straight away and is reconciled when it settles.

Verification

Some bank accounts need micro-deposit verification before they can be used. Until the member finishes it, the account shows as Verification pending and is skipped by collection. Their page prompts them to Finish verification.

When a debit is returned

A failed or reversed debit writes a Returned Bank Debit row that puts the amount back onto the balance. Returned debits cannot be refunded — there is nothing to refund, the money never arrived.
