The settings that decide how a store behaves: notifications, the messages customers receive, and the extra fields you collect at checkout.

The settings tab is where a store stops being a template and starts being this client's shop.

Notifications

Notification emails decide who at your end hears about a new order. Put a shared address on it rather than one person — an order that arrives while somebody is on leave should still be seen.

The messages customers get

MessageSent when
Order placedThey complete an order.
Order approvedAn order awaiting approval is accepted.
Order rejectedAn order is turned down.
Order cancelledAn order is cancelled.

Each carries a message you write. Say what happens next and roughly when — most "where is my order?" emails are caused by a confirmation that says nothing but "thank you".

Extra fields

Branded goods usually need something the basket does not know: a student name, a department, a staff number, a size confirmation.

Field typeFor
Additional fieldsThings you ask the buyer for.
Internal fieldsThings your team records against an order.

Fields can be short text, long text, or a list to choose from — and a list is far better than free text for anything you will have to read a hundred times.

ASK ONLY FOR WHAT YOU WILL USE
Every extra field is another thing between a customer and their order. If nobody in production reads it, it should not be on the form.
