CRM Contacts

The next task on a contact

What the next-task column shows, and why an empty one on an active lead is the most useful thing on the list.

Next task shows the soonest thing still to be done for a contact: what it is and when it is due. Completed tasks drop out of it, so the column always answers "what happens next?" rather than "what happened?".

The empty cell is the point

A contact you are actively working with nothing booked is a lead that will quietly go cold. Nobody has decided to drop it — there is simply no next step, so no day on which anyone will think about it again.

THE WEEKLY HABIT WORTH BUILDING
Filter to Active Leads, sort by next task, and work the blanks. It takes ten minutes and it is the single most valuable list in the CRM.

Keeping it meaningful

  • Book the next step at the end of every conversation, not at the end of the week.
  • Give the task a date you actually intend to act on. A pile of tasks dated "today" forever is the same as no tasks.
  • Complete tasks as you do them, so the column keeps telling the truth.
