Media categories

Grouping the library so people can browse it, and keeping the category list short enough to be useful.

Last updated September 2, 2026

Media categories are the top-level grouping of the library — the shelves everything sits on. Set them up before a big upload so images are filed as they arrive.

Choosing them

  • Name them the way somebody looking for a picture would think — "Campaign artwork", "Product photography", "Team and premises", "Logos".
  • Six to ten is plenty. A long list is browsed no more effectively than an unsorted library.
  • Do not create a category per campaign; that is what tags are for.

Category artwork

A category can carry its own image, which makes the library much easier to scan than a wall of identical folders.

Uncategorised images

FILTER FOR "NO CATEGORY" NOW AND THEN
Uncategorised images are still searchable and still invisible to anyone browsing. A few minutes filing them is what stops a library slowly becoming a dumping ground.

Deleting a category

Deleting is permanent and leaves the images in it needing a new home. Rename in preference to deleting — a category name that no longer fits is a five-second edit.
