In a bid to attract budget-conscious diners, McDonald’s tries to outsmart inflation.

  • McDonald’s Australia freezes prices on McSmart meal and Loose Change menu for a year
  • McSmart meal under $7 includes two burgers, fries, and a drink
  • CEO acknowledges rising costs but commits to affordable menu pricing

McDonald’s Australia has introduced a 12-month price freeze on two of its most popular value offerings—the McSmart Meal and the Loose Change menu—as a strategic response to rising cost-of-living pressures. CEO Joe Chiczewski acknowledged that while inflation and broader economic factors have driven up overall costs, McDonald’s remains committed to keeping its menu accessible for all Australians.

The McSmart Meal continues to be offered for under AU$7 and includes two burgers, fries, and a drink. Customers also have the option to swap one burger for three chicken nuggets or a sundae, ensuring both flexibility and value. Meanwhile, the Loose Change menu remains frozen, featuring eight staple items all priced at AU$4 or less, such as sausage McMuffins, hamburgers, frozen soft drinks from AU$1, and the iconic AU$0.50 soft serve cone.

This pricing commitment applies to every McDonald’s restaurant across Australia, including dine-in, drive-thru, and orders placed through the MyMacca’s app. Chiczewski emphasized that this move reflects McDonald’s enduring value proposition, dating back to its launch in Australia in 1971, when hamburgers cost just 20 cents. The company reported selling more than 600,000 McSmart Meals weekly and noted that one in five transactions includes an item from the Loose Change menu.

The initiative coincides with McDonald’s growth strategy, which includes plans to open 30 to 50 new restaurants nationwide over the next 12 months as part of a broader expansion plan. Despite increasing operational and input costs, the brand is leaning into value as a core element of its offering and customer promise.
