After 34 years with the company, Ajit Ponnambalam hands the Australian and New Zealand franchise business to Paul Lynch, ushering in a new era

After more than three decades at the helm of Snap-on Tools, Ajit Ponnambalam is stepping into retirement, closing a remarkable 34-year chapter with the global tool franchise. Ponnambalam, who has served as managing director, will now transition into an emeritus consulting role, guiding his successor, Paul Lynch, through what he describes as a defining period of continued growth in the mobile retail business.

During his nearly two decades leading Snap-on’s operations across Australia and New Zealand, Ponnambalam oversaw a period of significant expansion. Under his leadership, the company’s annual revenue rose from $16 million to nearly ten times that amount, and its fleet of mobile vans grew from 65 to 185. His influence was not only financial but also cultural, as he championed a philosophy rooted in integrity. “I’ve learned that business decisions should ring well even on the evening news,” he reflected, underscoring the values that have guided his career.

Taking over on October 25, Paul Lynch brings with him 16 years of experience within Snap-on Tools. He began his journey in a technical training role before advancing through sales and management positions to become the company’s national sales manager. Lynch is recognized for his ability to design and implement sales programs that have strengthened franchisee performance and improved operational efficiency across the network. His leadership style is expected to continue building on the company’s strong foundation while steering it toward new opportunities in the evolving franchise landscape.

The leadership transition extends beyond the managing director role. Stacey Gilbert, who has played a pivotal role in franchise management, will relocate to the United States, opening the door for Leah Dengate to assume the position of national franchise manager. This dual change marks a new chapter for Snap-on Tools, as the company continues to align its leadership structure with its ambitions for long-term growth and innovation.

With seasoned leadership handing over to a new generation, Snap-on Tools stands ready for its next phase of development. Ponnambalam’s legacy of steady expansion and ethical leadership will continue to shape the company’s culture, while Lynch and Dengate bring renewed energy to guide franchisees and strengthen the brand’s presence across the region. The transition reflects a balance of experience and evolution, positioning Snap-on Tools for sustained success in the years ahead.
