Sweet Treats Meet Community Commitment at Rita's

  • Rita's funds childhood cancer research through ice sales
  • Youth mentorship programs hosted at Rita's headquarters
  • Participation in autism awareness golf event

At Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, summer has become more than a season for frozen treats. It is a time for the franchise to double down on its community presence, supporting causes that range from childhood cancer research to youth mentorship.

The company rolled out its fan-favorite Frozen Lemonade flavor this year, dedicating part of the proceeds to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization that funds pediatric cancer research. Rita’s also joined forces with the Eagles Autism Foundation Golf Classic, bringing together franchisees, Philadelphia Eagles players, and supporters to raise funds for autism programs through a day of friendly competition.

Rita’s community outreach extended into youth entrepreneurship as well. Thirty students from Shelice’s Angels Business Academy were invited to spend a day learning about operations, flavor innovation, and marketing within the Rita’s system. The highlight was a “Design Your Dream Dessert” workshop, led by NFL linebacker and Rita’s franchisee Zaire Franklin, who encouraged the group to think creatively about business ownership.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis partnered with Rita’s at Big Boy Camp, a youth football clinic. Families and young athletes enjoyed frozen treats, underscoring Rita’s belief that joy and community engagement go hand in hand.

The brand also hosted a family event at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, providing frozen custard and Italian ice to families navigating medical challenges. For many, it was a brief but welcome respite marked by smiles and shared experiences.

“These programs reflect the heart of our brand,” said Carmela Hughley, senior vice president of marketing insights and innovation at Rita’s. “They’re about creating joyful moments that make a real difference.”

The company’s legacy was also on display as veteran franchisee Ron Calvey celebrated his 35th year with the brand, highlighting the resilience and longevity of its community-first model. Meanwhile, new franchisees Stephani and Clyde Kynard opened a shop in Toledo, Ohio, bringing Rita’s trademark mix of happiness and hospitality to a fresh market.

From charitable partnerships to franchisee milestones, Rita’s continues to weave community engagement into its brand identity. This summer, the company demonstrated that its recipe for success relies as much on purpose and connection as it does on frozen custard and Italian ice.
