At its 2026 annual conference, the coffee franchise celebrated its cultural roots, outlined technology upgrades and set its sights on 200 locations.

  • PJ's Coffee held the 2026 Annual Conference themed 'Rebirth' in New Orleans.
  • The Big Easy Initiative focuses on improving profitability and guest experience.
  • PJ's plans to reach 200 locations by the end of 2026.

PJ’s Coffee brought its franchise community to New Orleans for its 2026 Annual Conference, using the theme “Rebirth” to celebrate the brand’s heritage and prepare for its next stage of growth. Held September 9–11, the event brought franchisees and corporate team members together to discuss industry trends, changing consumer preferences and ways to strengthen café performance. President David Mesa shared the company’s vision for the coming year, while Chief Roastmaster Felton Jones examined global coffee market forecasts and emerging beverage trends.

The conference took place during a significant year for the New Orleans-born brand. PJ’s Coffee projected more than 14% unit growth in 2026, with plans to open 23 to 24 cafés and reach its 200th location by year-end. A central part of that strategy is The Big Easy Initiative, a systemwide effort designed to reinforce the brand’s New Orleans identity while improving franchisee profitability and the guest experience. Menu optimization, operational improvements and a renewed emphasis on hospitality are among the initiative’s priorities.

For PJ’s Coffee, expansion is closely tied to preserving the character that distinguishes it from competitors. Founded by Phyllis Jordan in 1978, the brand has built its identity around coffee craftsmanship and its New Orleans roots. Conference discussions examined how the company can carry that identity into new markets while responding to changing beverage preferences and pressures affecting the coffee industry. The challenge is to maintain a recognizable guest experience across an expanding network without losing the local character at the heart of the brand.

Technology also featured prominently, with PJ’s Coffee outlining plans for a new loyalty app and point-of-sale system expected to be fully rolled out in the first quarter of 2027. The platforms are intended to give franchisees greater visibility into local sales and loyalty data, improve labor planning and provide more flexibility for local promotions. For franchise businesses managing multiple locations, the Benchmarking feature available through Gorilla Dash can support comparisons of performance indicators and help identify areas that may warrant closer attention. This is a general application of the feature, not an indication that PJ’s Coffee uses the platform.

The conference also recognized the franchisees, café teams and corporate employees behind the brand’s progress. Tance Hughes of Natchez, Mississippi, received Franchisee of the Year, while John-Michael Johnson of Fort Mill, North Carolina, was named Rookie Franchisee of the Year. Twelve cafés received Community Involvement Awards, and additional honors recognized achievements in sales, customer experience, operations and growth. The awards underscored the contribution of local owners and employees to the company’s wider success. As PJ’s Coffee pursues its next milestone, its task will be to expand its reach while keeping the New Orleans culture and hospitality that have defined the brand for nearly five decades.
