Jersey Mike’s, the American sub chain with more than 3,400 restaurants across the US and Canada, will open its first UK restaurant on Monday, 9 November, at 1-4 Argyll Street, just off Oxford Street. The opening marks the brand’s debut in Europe and the start of what it describes as a long-term push across the UK and Ireland. To celebrate, the first three people in the queue will win free subs for a year, and the first 50 through the door will receive a free regular sub.
The Argyll Street restaurant is only the first of four planned for central London before the end of the year. Baker Street is expected to open in mid-November, followed by New Oxford Street, near Tottenham Court Road, in late November, and Cranbourn Street, in the Covent Garden and Leicester Square area, in December. The rollout falls in the brand’s 70th year, since it was founded on the Jersey Shore in 1956.
The UK launch is being led by Satnam Leihal, Chief Executive of JM Submarines UK Ltd, the master franchisee for the UK and Ireland. The company has agreed to open 400 restaurants across both markets under an arrangement announced in January. Peter Cancro, the brand’s founder, said he was excited to work with Leihal, calling London “our starting point” and pointing to a belief in building strong teams and creating something that lasts.
The menu depends on freshness and process. Meats and cheeses are sliced to order, bread is baked throughout the day, and guests can order a sub “Mike’s Way,” topped with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, spices, and a house oil and red wine vinegar blend known as The Juice. Holding that standard across hundreds of restaurants requires shared training and clear procedures. Gorilla Dash features a Resource Library designed to give franchise networks one place to store and distribute materials such as training guides and brand standards, so that a new team in Cranbourn Street works from the same instructions as one in Argyll Street.
Jersey Mike’s arrives in a market where American sandwich and chicken chains have been competing for attention, and it will need to win over London guests quickly. Its plan to open four restaurants in a matter of weeks gives it a concentrated central London presence and an early test of whether the made-to-order approach travels.
