The Coffee Club, one of Australia’s most recognizable café chains, is leaning into its past to shape its future. The company has introduced what it calls a “nowstalgic” rebrand, a design and marketing overhaul that revives some of its 1980s roots while updating its stores and menus for a new generation of diners.
Nikki Price, the chain’s general manager of marketing and product, said the refresh is less about chasing trends than about reconnecting with people who have grown up with the brand. “We’re listening to what customers want — a welcoming space that feels familiar but also fresh,” she said. “It’s about honoring our past while staying relevant.”
The campaign, tagged “The Club For Everyone,” aims to expand The Coffee Club’s reach beyond its reputation as a comfortable stop for older guests. Alongside updated interiors, the company is introducing weekly app promotions, playful secret menu items, and a stronger digital presence, all designed to appeal to a broader, younger audience.
In the kitchen, the nostalgia is deliberate. Beloved toastie sandwiches such as Tuna Melt and Chicken Schnitzel have returned, and the menu now features retro “spider” drinks in raspberry and passionfruit. They are paired with new flavors inspired by global café culture, including a pistachio iced latte that draws on flavors from Dubai.
The physical changes are significant, too. More than 50 locations were refurbished in the past year, and 80 more are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. A flagship café in Noranda, Perth, will reopen on October 1 with a weekend of community celebrations and giveaways.
The rebrand was developed with the creative agency Jana + Koos, whose designers drew on neon color palettes and playful motifs that recall the chain’s early days. The idea, according to Ms. Price, was to strike a balance between familiarity and reinvention.
For a brand that has sometimes struggled to distinguish itself in Australia’s crowded café market, the gamble is clear: embrace nostalgia while pushing toward modernity. The Coffee Club hopes its “nowstalgic” blend of old and new will help cement its place not just as a household name, but as a café for everyone.
