With 97 active master territories, the commercial cleaning franchisor is looking beyond major cities to fuel its next phase of expansion.
- Stratus Clean nears 100 master franchise territories.
- Focus on secondary markets offers growth potential.
- Milwaukee's success illustrates franchise model benefits.
Stratus Clean is approaching a milestone of 100 master franchise territories, and its path to that goal runs through markets national franchise brands often overlook. The commercial cleaning franchisor reported 97 active regions as of October 27 and identified 25 additional U.S. markets for potential growth. Rather than concentrating exclusively on major metropolitan areas, the company is targeting secondary and tertiary markets where it believes franchisees can build relationships and establish a presence with fewer competitors.
The expansion strategy reflects a deliberate choice about where franchise opportunities can take root. Stratus Clean is pursuing markets across states including Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas and Vermont. CEO Doug Flaig said the company’s progress toward 100 territories reflects a model designed to work in markets of different sizes. Rob Lancit, Vice President of Franchise Development, has emphasized the advantages of smaller communities, including opportunities for owners to become established and build local connections.
The company’s Milwaukee territory offers a closer look at that approach. Business partners Tywone Redmond and Darrel McNeal acquired the southeastern Wisconsin territory in August 2023 and began operating in January 2024. Before awarding their first unit franchise, they secured a commercial cleaning client. They subsequently added multi-unit franchisees and developed a measured sales pace, aiming to award approximately two unit franchises each month. By January 2026, their territory had surpassed $100,000 in recurring business.
Their responsibilities are divided according to their strengths. Redmond leads sales and trains unit franchise owners, while McNeal oversees operations, including billing and invoicing. The partners also credit the wider Stratus network with helping them navigate the business, particularly the willingness of other master franchisees to share practical experience. That peer support, combined with recurring revenue, has helped them build a business around predictable growth and a more manageable working rhythm.
Training and mentorship are central to Stratus Clean’s approach to developing new master franchisees. New owners receive hands-on training, ongoing guidance and a dedicated mentor, while regular peer discussions encourage the exchange of operating practices. As franchise networks enter additional markets, the Knowledge Base feature available through Gorilla Dash can offer a centralized place to organize procedures, training materials and operational guidance. For Stratus Clean, the push toward 100 territories is not simply about adding markets. It is about finding operators who can build durable businesses within the communities they serve.
