Slim Chickens is expanding its footprint with a significant entry into California through a six-unit development agreement with Roper Foods LLC, marking the brand’s first formal foray into the state. The amended agreement builds on Roper Foods’ existing partnership with the concept in Nevada and reflects a deliberate strategy to grow in high-demand Western markets.
Under the agreement, the new California locations will be developed across several counties, with the first restaurant expected to open in Sacramento County. The deal leverages Roper Foods’ recent experience building Slim Chickens in Northern Nevada, where the operator opened its first location in Reno in 2023 and followed with a second site in July 2025. Additional development is underway in the region, positioning the team to apply lessons learned to the California rollout.
A representative for Roper Foods said the brand stood out because of its strong momentum and clear long-term vision. The company’s emphasis on quality, Southern hospitality, and operational support contributed to the decision to expand the Slim Chickens portfolio westward. This confidence is important in markets where consumers have many dining options, and the ability to resonate locally can influence long-term success.
Slim Chickens offers franchisees a range of development formats, including freestanding drive-thrus, endcaps, conversions, in-line restaurants, and nontraditional locations. This variety allows operators to adapt to diverse real estate opportunities and trade areas, supporting tailored growth strategies in California’s varied markets.
Jackie Lobdell, vice president of franchise development at Slim Chickens, said that expanding into California is a strategic milestone for the brand and one the company approached with experienced partners. She noted that Roper Foods has demonstrated the operational discipline and market insight needed to grow responsibly in competitive environments. With this West Coast move, Slim Chickens continues to build its presence across the United States while offering opportunities for multi-unit development.
