Nisha Katona's Indian Restaurant Chain Brings Authentic Street Food and Charitable Mission to Norfolk

Mowgli Street Food, the much-loved Indian restaurant brand known for its vibrant street food and authentic home cooking, officially opened in Norwich on Friday, August 8, 2025. The Norwich location marks the chain's first restaurant in Norfolk, expanding founder Nisha Katona MBE's vision of bringing authentic Indian home cooking to communities across the United Kingdom.

Founded by television personality Nisha Katona, who opened the first Mowgli location in Liverpool in 2014, the chain now operates 24 restaurants across the country. Katona, who was awarded an MBE and worked as a child protection barrister for 20 years before launching Mowgli, built the restaurant concept around what she describes as "the type of food that Indians cook and eat at home".

Anyone dining during the first week of opening (August 8-15) can enjoy complimentary Chat Bombs as part of the grand opening celebration. These signature appetizers feature light, airy puffs filled with yogurt, spices, chutney, and chickpeas, representing the restaurant's commitment to authentic Indian street food experiences. The Norwich menu includes popular dishes such as treacle tamarind fries, Keralan fried chicken, and the signature Mother Butter Chicken.

The restaurant's interior design reflects Mowgli's distinctive aesthetic, creating an atmosphere inspired by Indian night markets with warm color palettes, botanical elements, and authentic touches that transport diners to the vibrant street food culture of India. The brand describes its food as "the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs, and spices", emphasizing fresh preparation and intense flavors that characterize traditional Indian home cooking.

Central to Mowgli's expansion strategy is its commitment to community support through The Mowgli Trust, the restaurant's charitable foundation. The Mowgli Trust donates over £500,000 annually to local community charities and international causes, with each restaurant location partnering with nearby charitable organizations. The Norwich location is expected to establish partnerships with local Norfolk charities, following the model established at other Mowgli locations nationwide.

Born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, as the daughter of Indian immigrant doctors, Nisha Katona founded Mowgli Street Food after giving up her career as a Child Protection Barrister in 2014. Her transition from legal practice to restaurant entrepreneurship has resulted in one of the UK's most successful Indian restaurant chains, recognized for both culinary excellence and community impact.

The Norwich opening represents continued expansion for the Mowgli brand, which has established a reputation for combining authentic Indian flavors with modern restaurant operations and community engagement. The company states it exists "to enrich lives in the cities we go to, raising thousands for local charities and international causes", making charitable giving a core component of its business model.

Each Mowgli location maintains consistency in menu offerings while adapting to local market preferences and establishing community partnerships. The Norwich restaurant follows this established pattern, offering the full range of Mowgli's signature dishes while preparing to engage with Norfolk's charitable organizations and community groups.

The restaurant industry has seen increased consumer interest in authentic ethnic cuisine and socially responsible dining options, positioning Mowgli's Norwich opening strategically within current market trends. The combination of genuine Indian home cooking, distinctive restaurant design, and meaningful community partnerships differentiates Mowgli from traditional Indian restaurant concepts.
