Mark Newman will step down as CEO of Dymocks Retail in November 2025, ending a five-year tenure marked by modernization and growth for Australia’s leading bookstore franchise. Under his leadership, Dymocks introduced a nationwide Click & Collect system, opened and relocated stores in Brisbane, Adelaide, and regional centres, and completed a major refurbishment of its flagship George Street store in Sydney.

Newman, who brought with him extensive retail experience from the United Kingdom, said he was “honoured” to have contributed to the ongoing success of an iconic Australian brand. His approach blended digital innovation with a respect for the heritage that has defined Dymocks since its founding in 1879.

Dymocks Group chairman John Forsyth praised Newman for his leadership “during a complex period,” citing his role in positioning the retailer for long-term success. Forsyth acknowledged that Newman navigated the challenges of digital transformation and evolving consumer habits while strengthening the company’s market position.

As Dymocks celebrates 146 years of operation, Forsyth reaffirmed the company’s commitment to innovation, resilience, and serving its loyal customer base. He stressed that the next phase of growth will continue to draw on the values that have shaped the company’s legacy.

To ensure a smooth transition, the board has initiated a structured leadership handover. The move is part of a planned succession designed to maintain operational stability and strategic momentum while exploring new opportunities in an increasingly competitive book retail sector.
