Colin and Michelle Blackburn, the husband-and-wife team behind Kitchen Makeovers Cambridge, have chosen to mark their anniversary in an unconventional way. Instead of hosting a celebration, the couple has launched a kitchen makeover giveaway worth £10,000, designed to transform the home of one deserving local resident.
The initiative invites nominations from the community, encouraging people to put forward friends, neighbors, or loved ones who may be facing difficult times or who consistently give back to others. “A new kitchen can transform lives, especially for those who may not have the funds for their own upgrade,” Colin said, highlighting the potential of a renovated space to bring a sense of renewal and comfort.
Community involvement has long been central to the Blackburns’ approach to business. In addition to managing their thriving franchise, they have supported local sports teams and taken on roles as informal mentors within their community. “We’ve always been passionate about supporting our local area,” Michelle noted. “This giveaway felt like the natural next step—the biggest way we could give back.”
Their efforts reflect a wider culture within Kitchen Makeovers, a franchise that has encouraged its owners to embed themselves in their local areas. Will Frankling, co-founder of the company, praised the Cambridge team’s generosity and pointed to the initiative as an example of how franchisees can use their platforms to make a lasting impact.
The giveaway officially launched on 27 July, with nominations open until the end of August. Entries are being collected across the CB postcode area, and the winner will be selected based on merit and need. The prize will culminate in a complete kitchen renovation carried out by the Blackburns’ team.
Looking ahead, the couple hopes to make the project an annual tradition, tying future business milestones to continued acts of generosity. For them, the initiative is about much more than plaster and paint. It represents a commitment to gratitude, recognition, and the belief that business success should create opportunities for others.
By turning a personal anniversary into a community celebration, the Blackburns are showing how franchising can combine entrepreneurship with empathy, setting an example for how business milestones can serve as meaningful touchpoints of social good.
