Images and video in a post

Almost every social post needs an image. Add it on the channel you are writing, and choose whether to use the same one everywhere when prompted.

Shapes that work

ShapeSuits
SquareThe safest all-rounder. Works acceptably on every platform.
PortraitInstagram and anything read on a phone — it fills more of the screen.
LandscapeLinkedIn, Facebook link posts, anything read on a desktop.

If you are producing one asset for everywhere, make it square and keep anything important away from the edges — different platforms crop differently.

Video

ASPECT RATIO IS THE USUAL REASON A VIDEO FAILS
Platforms accept video only within a range of shapes, and a clip outside that range is rejected at publishing time — not when you upload it. If a video post failed on Instagram or Facebook but the text posted fine elsewhere, re-export the video square or portrait and try again.

Keep videos short, and assume they will be watched with the sound off. Anything that only works with audio should carry captions.

Before you schedule

Look at the preview for each channel. It shows the crop that platform will apply, which is where you find out that your text sits exactly where Instagram cuts the image.
