Image sizes and cropping

download Download PDF

One upload becomes several images. The library keeps the original and produces the shapes the rest of Gorilla Dash needs — square, rectangle, portrait, banner and thumbnail.

Check the crops

An automatic crop takes the middle. That is right most of the time and badly wrong for a photo where the subject sits to one side — a product on the left of a wide shot loses its head in the square version.

The crop for each shape can be adjusted, and zoomed out where the automatic one is too tight. Do it on the images you know will be used a lot; it takes seconds and it is visible in every post they appear in.

When to use the original

  • A GIF — only the original keeps it animated.
  • A PNG with transparency — a logo that has to sit on a coloured background.
  • Print — where you need the full resolution.

Everywhere else, a generated size is the better choice: smaller, faster and already the right shape.

Quality

UPLOAD BIG, PUBLISH SMALL
The library can make a small image from a large one; it cannot make a large one from a small one. A logo uploaded at 200 pixels wide will look soft in every banner it ever appears in, and no setting will fix it.
