Creating a mailing list

download Download PDF

A mailing list is a saved set of rules for choosing recipients out of your contacts — not a spreadsheet of addresses. That is why a list stays current: add a customer today and they are in tomorrow's send.

Creating one

  1. Open Mailing Lists and choose Create Mailing List.
  2. Name it for who is in it, not for the campaign — "Customers, last 12 months" outlives "March newsletter".
  3. Set the filters that choose the people.
  4. Save, and check the recipient count.

Read the count before you send

THE COUNT IS THE SANITY CHECK
A list you expected to be four hundred showing eleven thousand means a filter is not doing what you think. Never launch a campaign without looking at the number — it is the last chance to catch a mistake that reaches real customers.

Names that stay useful

Lists accumulate. A year in, "New list", "New list 2" and "Test" are unusable and nobody dares delete them. Name each one after the audience it selects, and the library stays worth having.

A list belongs to the organisation or to a tribe. A tribe's list covers that tribe's own contacts.
